The 9-1-1 number should be used any time you need a police officer, fire equipment, or ambulance to respond to your location. Often times, when people do not know who to call, they will dial 9-1-1 for things that they should be calling elsewhere for. This ties up 9-1-1 operators and may delay getting police, fire or ambulance to someone in need. The following is a list of these things that are not handled by 9-1-1 and some suggestions as to where you could call to find the information you need. By looking up and dialing these numbers for yourself you are freeing up 9-1-1 operators to handle police, fire or ambulance requests.

Telephone service interruptions
9-1-1 operators will not pass along information for you if your phone is out of order. Nor do they keep listings of service outages. To report your phone out of order or to check on wide area outages, contact:

Cable Television
9-1-1 operators will not pass along information for you if your cable TV is out of order. Nor do they keep listings of service outages. To report your cable TV out or order or to check on wide area outages, contact TIME WARNER COMMUNICATIONS at 456-5000.

Residential power outages
9-1-1 operators will not pass along information for you if your electric is off. Nor do they keep listings of service outages. To report your electric is off or to check on wide area outages, contact:

Street directions
9-1-1 operators will not provide directions to your particular destination. Nor will they provide directions to your particular destination. Nor will they provide locations of streets, buildings, landmarks, etc. For information on these contact AAA (Auto Club of Rochester) at 461-4660.

Traffic, Weather, Road conditions or closings or School closings
9-1-1 operators will not provide information on these conditions or closings. During storms you should listen to your radio or television for up to date conditions and closings. Or you can contact:
