Why is my recycling picked up by Waste Management and not the Department of Public Works?
Residential recycling is provided free of charge to all Village of Fairport residents by Waste Management as part of an agreement with the Town of Perinton and Waste Management.
My recycling is being thrown in the back of a garbage truck. Is it really being recycled?
Yes. In 2014 The Monroe County Recycling Center upgraded to single stream recycling. As a result of this upgrade recyclables are no longer required to be sorted at curbside when collecting by recycling crews.
Can I recycle all plastics marked #1-#7?
The recycling symbol that includes a number does not necessarily indicate recyclability curbside. Recycle plastics by their shape – empty bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs. For more information visit www.monroecounty.gov/recycling.
Should I Separate my recyclables using plastic bags?
No. please keep recyclables unbagged and loose in container. Plastic bags, cords, ropes, etc. wrap around recycling machinery causing facility downtime and also contaminate recyclable paper. Plastic bags and product wrapping may be recycled at most large retail stores.
Can I recycle caps and lids from containers?
Yes, after rinsing, caps and lids should be reattached.
Can Styrofoam egg cartons, coffee ups, and packing material with a #4 or #6 on it be recycled?
Foam cannot be placed in recycling bins. The ecopark will accept clean, white, block packaging foam only. Visit ecoparkmcny.com for more information.
Can I recycle pizza boxes?
Yes, if they are clean. If the bottom is greasy please rip of the top of the box and recycle it. The bottom of the box should be disposed of with residential trash.
Can I place small electronics in my recycling bin or TVs and appliances at the curb?
Electronics and appliances are not accepted at the curb. Visit the electronics recycling page or appliance recycling page for additional information.
I do not have a blue bin or need a new blue bin. How can I get one?
Please call the Fairport Public Works Department at 585-421-3119 to make arrangements for picking up a new blue bin at their public works facility located at 22 Water Street in the Village of Fairport.
